You can plug it into an electrical outlet using a USB plug or use normal AAA batteries to power it up. However, if you use normal batteries, be prepared to switch them out quite often. One user mentioned that it didn't work with a certain type of crystal ball that had a solar system built-in. The reason being that the ball was round and the base was not shaped to accommodate its curvature. However, it worked well with flat-based objects.
