Eserleri, bugün modern felsefede halen tartışma konusu olan zaman, varoluş ve hakikat gibi pek çok sorunu irdelemesi ve görüşlerinin Batı felsefesini derinden etkilemesi bakımından da ayrı bir önem taşımaktadır.Augustinus zamana yazgılı bir varlık olan insan ile Tanrı'nın zamana aşkın doğası arasındaki görüş ve anlayış farkını sunar ve mükemmelleşme çabasındaki insan ruhunun öncelikle bu farkı idrak etmesi gerektiğini vurgular.
