- Goethe'nin, on altıncı yüzyılın ilk yarısında yaşamış George Faust isimli magusun etrafında şekillenen fakat aynı zamanda demonlarla sözleşme akdetme, simya yoluyla unsurları dönüştürme gibi antik motiflerle de beslenen bir Alman halk efsanesine dayalı Faust tragedyasına 1773 yılından itibaren çalışmaya başladığını birtakım belgelere dayanarak söyleyebiliyoruz.İlk fragmanlar ise 1790 ilkbaharında neşredilmiştir. Yıllar boyunca sahne sahne çalışılan eserin ilk kısmı, bugün de muhafaza edilen düzeniye, 1808 yılında Goethe Külliyatı'nın sekizinci cildi olarak Tıibingen'de J.G. Cotta tarafından basılmıştır. Ikinci kısmın da dahil edildiği ı:zm mısradan oluşan bu büyük edebiyat anıtının nihayete ermiş yayımı ise 1832'de şairin ölümünden sonra gerçekleşebilmiştir.Şairler Prensi'nin hayatının altmış yılına yayılan Faust, dünya edebiyatının şahikalarında gezen, insan zihninin bir mitoloji kataloğu içinde harmanlanan derinlikli hallerinin hepsine temas edilmiş muhteşem bir epik tragedyadır. Eser bize, daha yüce olana ulaşmak isteyen sancılı insan ruhunun sihir, simya ve şeytani güçlerin anaforunda kayboluşu, taşıdığı ikilikten yakalanıp uçuruma sürüklenişi ve nihayet Tanrı'nın, bütün nakısaları içinde bu ruhu takdir edişinin kusursuz bir anlatısını ve dayandığı arkaik halk hikayesinin çok ötesine geçen mütekamil uyarlamasını sunar. Böylece, R. Shattuck'un değerlendirmesiyle, Faust'un büyüklüğü, insanın yüceliğinin aynı zamanda zayıflığını da kapsıyor olması ve göz kamaştırıcı şiir sanatında yatar. Goethe, folklorun, tarihin ve mitlerin yeknesak ve yalın irfanından bir edebiyat heykeli dikmiştir.
