Yazarın Dante'nin İlahi Komedya'sından esinlenerek üç cilt olarak tasarladığı eserin ilk cildi sansür komitesinden büyük eleştiriler alır, ikinci cildi ise ağır bir bunalım döneminden geçen Gogol tarafından yakılır, birkaç kez yeniden yazdığı bu bölümler sonradan yayımlanır, üçüncü cildiyse hiç yazılamamıştır.Düzenbaz Çiçikov, zengin olmak hayaliyle kurguladığı şüpheli planını uygulamak üzere yerel toprak ağalarının hayatta olmayan kölelerini kağıt üzerinde satın almak için kasaba kasaba dolaşır.
