- Rusya'da ilk kez 1900 yılında Jizn dergisinde yayımlanan Çukurda, Çehov'un edebiyatçı kimliğine, ülkesinin toplumsal ve siyasi yaşamında son derece etkili bir şahsiyet olarak üstlendiği rolü de eklediği önemli yapıtlarından biridir. Yazar, dostlarına yazdığı mektuplarda fabrika yaşamına ve çürümüşlüğüne dair, köylülerin yaşamıyla ilgili bir öykü olarak tanımladığı eserini, ülkesinin farklı bölgelerinde görev yaptığı hastanelerde edindiği izlenimlerden ve Sahalin'de bulunduğu dönemde tanık olduğu gerçek olaylardan esinlenerek kurgulamıştır. 20. yüzyıl başında Rus toplumunda ortaya çıkan sosyolojik gerilimlere odaklanan Çehov, Ukleyevo bucağında yaşayan yoksul köylüler ile dükkan sahipleri ve fabrikatörler arasındaki derin uçurumu sorgular.
