- Antonio Gramsci (1891-1937) was a founding member of the Italian Communist Party. In 1926’, he was imprisoned for his criticisms of Mussolini and fascism and spent the rest of his life in prison. Gramsci, who continued to write under the censorship and oppression conditions of the fascist government, wrote groundbreaking notes, including The Modern Prince, while he was in prison. In these notes, Gramsci frames a clear name that social sciences, as well as political philosophy, have been discussing for years, and one of his most heated works, critical thought: Machiavelli and the Prince. This brilliant criticism, nourished by historical, philosophical and political channels, subjects the Prince figure discussed by Machiavelli to a kind of reinterpretation process, and from there it leads to the Modern Prince figure: Who is this Modern Prince that Gramsci incarnated with Machiavelli's inspiration? Is Gramsci's Modern Prince, like Machiavelli's Prince, an example of evil to be cursed and morally condemned? Is it a legal and political image or a concrete and historical personality?
